Topic: Game Shows

  • Luke asks the question, “Is Ninja Warrior a game show?” to which most of the panel responds that it is not. However that leads the conversation down the strange path to the many interesting concepts of Japanese game shows.

  • Nabbit is looking for some novelty when it comes to game shows. He doesn’t really like the whole “trivia” vibe of Jeopardy and the like.

  • Nabbit rails against the current state of Family Feud. The panel talks about their favorite hosts (Oktober kinda takes the discussion into a strange place with this factoid)

Topic: Universal Monsters

After an epic intro about Gremlins the panel starts by clarifying the definition of the Universal Monsters, including: Dracula, Wolfman, The Invisible Man, Frankenstein’s Monster, The Gill Man and several others. Major Monocle wants to see them all go up against Ivan Ooze.

Luke brings up the attempt to reboot these monsters into a shared cinematic universe that started with Tom Cruise in The Mummy, which makes Nabbit miss Brendan Fraiser soooooo much.

Luke also brings up that one of the glaring issues with this franchise is that we have had half a dozen Frankenstein movies in the last decade….a few to many perhaps. Oktober is interested to see what they might do with “The Bride” and Nabbit thinks it’s an inevitable spin-off.

Everybody talks about the various ways they can reboot “The Creature From The Black Lagoon” (soap opera/ Lifetime Movie is one favorite idea) and all the ways that CG will be used. From Jump Scares to CG spittle, it’s all there. Nabbit suggests that the producers take a note from the makers of “The Thing” and use practical effects.

Luke brings up the Invisible Man and how he doesn’t think it will translate to a modern audience, which leads to the obvious Hollow Man comparison. Nabbit brings up practical effects again, specifically referring to Memoirs of an Invisible Man (1992) in which chewing gum plays a big part.

Game: “Drink It” Or “Sink It” Challenge: The June Bug

Nabbit notes a bit of foam on top, due to shaking. The color leads to several jokes about Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and other forms of ooze. Oktober slams it back before anybody else can get to it, but once everybody downs it there is a round of enjoyable noises. Nabbit says that he would only do this kind of drink as a shot. Nabbit talks about adding whipped cream that would make it something more like a blow job shot. Luke talks briefly about the cocktail version of this drink. Try it out and let us know what you think. (The recipe is the previous post)

Would You Rather Wednesday (07-19-17)

Here is a new midweek segment featuring one panelist, one “Would You Rather…” question and one “Gold Ribbon” Recommendation. This one has Nabbit deciding between having Elephant tusks or Antlers and which would impact his life the most. For his “Gold Ribbon” Recommendation he chose the collected works of Rob Cantor… mainly because of the joy he brought to the world with “Actual Cannibal Shia Labeouf

Topic: Adult Life Skills

  • Major Monocle complains about the youths and the need for them to develop the “Job Retention” Skill. Nabbit points out that Major Monocle has the skill but doesn’t necessarily use it. Luke breaks down one of the essential elements of this skill: Time Management (i.e. Showing Up).

  • Nabbit wants to change the flow of the conversation, he wants to discuss life skills that are , in his words, awesome. Major Monocle suggests driving cars. Luke brings up one (that is related) that he doesn’t have, but thinks is awesome…that of mechanical car repair. Nabbit brings up the classic man stance that makes it look like you might be able to solve the problem.

  • The panel talks about modifying computers briefly. Major Monocle points out that it is a different experience when you’re an adult and you own the machine, as compared to taking apart the family computer when you’re a kid.

  • Major Monocle and Nabbit talk about home maintenance and how they enjoy looking at a problem and knowing how much it’s gonna cost to get it fixed. There is also talk about the distance from studs, which makes Luke’s eyes just glaze over.

  • Nabbit talks about Frivolous Spending as an adult life skill. The ability to determine your budget and modify it to get what you want…what Nabbit calls, Monetary Justification. Nabbit talks about the process of rationalizing the idea and getting someone to reinforce it.

Game: “Drink It” or “Sink It” Challenge :

The Beach Cruzer

This pineapple heavy drink gives everybody a different sensation. Oktober tastes a bit of grapefruit, Nabbit smells the pineapple and also a bit of vanilla…and Major Monocle just gets the taste of pineapple. A simple drink for a simple time. Give it a try and let us know what you think (The recipe is the post right before these notes).

Recipe: The Beach Cruzer

  • 1 1/4 oz Sailor Jerry’s Spiced Rum

  • 3 oz Pineapple Juice

  • 3 oz Cranberry Juice

  • Combine the Pineapple Juice, Cranberry Juice and the 1 1/4 oz of Sailor Jerry’s Spiced Rum in an iced Collins glass.

  • That’s it…real simple.

Topic: The Best Thing Since Sliced Bread

  • Nabbit points out that since the invention of sliced bread humans have been to space, so he thinks we’ve done a few things that are better than sliced bread. Major Monocle talks about the greatness that is the “Spork” and Nabbit says he is surprised that it hasn’t become more of a thing. {Editorial Note: It appears that the Spork (1874) actually predates sliced bread(1928) and although we regret the error…we’re guessing you didn’t know that either 🙂  }

  • The panel talks about non-pre-sliced bread. Major Monocle is all about turning it into garlic bread, to which Nabbit turns his opinion of frozen foods around when talking about Texas Toast Garlic bread (available in your grocer’s freezer).

  • Major Monocle, Nabbit and Oktober get into a debate about who makes the best frozen lasagna, Stouffer’s or Marie Callenders. There are strong opinions on both sides.

  • There is wide agreement on the wonders of Magic Shell. Major Monocle is the only one who isn’t that into it. Nabbit, Oktober and Luke all have great memories of the amazing times they had with it (some of which were within the last month).

Game: “You Name It!”

In this game Luke gives out the description of an item or a trend and the panel names it. Sounds simple, but with a panel like this you never know what you’re going to get.
