 Topic:  The True Crime Genre

  • Major Monocle expresses his displeasure for the genre because his wife has filled his DVR with shows from Investigation Discovery.  While Nabbit wonders whether he enjoys the True Crime Genre because he likes Batman.

  • Oktober brings up the Netflix show Making a Murderer and how the way that the show is presented is supposed to point the audience towards a certain conclusion. The panel starts talking about the formula for these types of shows (including the fictionalized crime shows like Law and Order).

  • The panel invents a new board game. It’s a lot like the game of life, but different.

  • Luke states (to general agreement) that these crime stories benefit from the train wreck effect (you just can’t look away no matter how horrible it is).

  • Luke brings up the podcast, You Must Remember This, which did an amazing series on the Hollywood Of Charles Manson. In it Karina Longworth does a stellar job of showing the twisted charisma that he had over his followers, which shows another possible appeal of the genre: The Charismatic Stranger.

  • An escalation of famous murders leads to the whole “God is a murderer” trope. Which leads to the whole panel <minus Major Monocle> singing MmmmmMmmmmmMmmmm from the Crash Test Dummies (off the album “God Shuffled His Feet”).

  • Major Monocle suggests the other theory that because the stories of the True Crime genre are so outside the normal human experience and that is what interests people….and then suggests that the whole panel get face tattoos to scratch that itch.

Game: Commonalities

Title: Fantastic Beasts and Pixie Sticks

Run Time: 17 min 32 secs

Host: Luke Rodgers

Panelists: Oktober, Nabbit, Major Monocle

Topic:  Mythical Creatures and Fantastic Beasts

  • Luke lays out the topic and then Major Monocle takes a strange side trip by talking about Unicorn mayonnaise.

  • The panel bullies Oktober into admitting her fascination with Werewolves. Luke tells an embarrassing story about her cornering a werewolf at a Halloween event.

  • Luke thinks that the Will O The Wisp is an interesting mythical creature mainly because it isn’t overtly dangerous….until you’ve been lured into the swamp and drown because of them.

  • Major Monocle brings up dragons and the panel goes into a quick discussion on the various forms dragons come in (western/ Eastern, Talking and Non-Talking). Nabbit makes a DragonHeart reference which lead us to make jokes about Benedict Cumberbatch’s name.

  • Oktober brings it back to werewolves and starts trying to justify it by saying that they were in Harry Potter. In an attempt to bring the panel back from that silly path he mentions Underpants Gnomes.

  • Another favorite creature that Luke thinks is interesting is the Incubus and the Succubus. Mainly because they are a dark mirror of humanities desires and the stories about them can tell us something about or fears.

  • The panel goes back to the Cockatrice as Nabbit describes how he thinks the creature came about. Mainly it was a pissed off chicken and a guy who needed to not seem like a coward.

Game: “Drink It” Or “Sink It” Challenge

This weeks drink is something befitting the topic and your childhood memories…It’s The Pixie Stick. A sour and sweet drink that you can enjoy and not worry about it hitting you too hard. The panel enjoyed it and thought it was just like drinking the candy. They also enjoyed the presentation.  Luke brought up the idea that you could modify this to be served Up with a rim made out of the actually candy.

Topic:  Music: Triggering Memories and Senses

  • Luke starts off the conversation with Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin'” because he thinks it’s lyrics are so descriptive that it can put you into the scene. You can see the streetlights, smell the perfume and see the shadows.

  • Nabbit takes a side trip down a weird rabbit hole about what he thinks about everytime he hears Bon Jovi (and no it is not Direct TV).

  • Nabbit gets in on the whole dream thread and brings up Röyksopp’s “What Else Is There?” He says that the video (just follow that link) is very much like a dream and actually informs the watcher about the state of the singer.

  • Oktober thinks back to the early days of MTV whenever she listens to Fleetwood Mac’s “Gypsy” because she says that the production value of the song so defines that era.

  • Oktober decides to take this converation to a dark place by telling the panel about the time she spent time in an institution and what she spent her time listening to. (George Harrison’s All Things Must Pass“)

  • The panel gangs up on Major Monocle because he hasn’t really brought up any songs. So he went to a song he had a heard his Dad play a million times…. Metallica’s “Enter Sandman”

  • Luke feels empowered by the feeling he gets from We Are Scientists “After Hours”…. it feels like after you’ve had a few drinks and you are feeling really good and you feel you could accomplish anything.

  • The panel wonders why Luke put smell into the show topic notes. He explains that it was all about the senses and brings up the song from Sara Bareilles called Lulu’s Pie Song (from the musical Waitress) which is simply about making a pie. By the end of it he can smell it baking.

  • After the panel tries to come up with solutions to the problems presented by Oktober she accuses everyone of watching too much Runaway (1984).

  • Nabbit talks about his most recent interaction with a robot. At a convenience store one made him a F’real Milk Shake. This starts a conversation about what was considered to be futuristic 30- 40 years ago.
